Communities clash over natural resources

Uganda- Refugees living in Uganda from neighbouring South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo have been cutting down trees in the area in which they live. This sparked off clashes between the local communities and the refugees. The timber is used for the construction of homes, fuel and to make charcoal. The UNHCR says that the settling of refugees was causing widespread environmental damage as an average of 20 trees per year is cut.

Zambia’s plans to slaughter 2,000 hippos

Conservationists are accusing the Zambian government of planning to make a profit from trophy hunters. This is after the government announced plans to slaughter after 2,000 hippopotamuses to control overpopulation. An official at the tourism ministry, who did not want to be named, said a five-year cull of hippos in a park in eastern Zambia would start in May.

Nigeria postpones presidential election by one-week

the president of the Nigerian Electoral Commission announced five hours before the opening of polling stations, that the presidential poll in Nigeria, originally scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 16, is postponed until February 23. The two main parties condemn this postponement. They postponed both the presidential and legislative elections arguing logistical problems. According to the INEC, this postponement should help ensure the holding of “free and transparent elections”.

South African musician praises apartheid

Steve Hofmeyr, the Afrikaans singer lite up a storm on social media after he shared a picture of himself with the old apartheid flags. The singer has before been known for his racism, however he has defended his action as an element of “freedom of expression”. The picture was taken in a pub which displays the offensive symbol of oppression. He captioned the snap with the statement 2Good rains. Found a waterproof roof. Mooi ne?,”
